CRECE – The People’s Team
The People’s (soccer) Team of CRECE was developed out of a need to provide youth with alternative venues to the streets. We began this project on December on 2009 and the program objectives are:
1) All children are welcome and included regardless of socio-economic background and sport experience;
2) Build strong minds and healthy bodies;
3) Develop in children a sense of community service and teamwork;
4) Diminish youth involved or victims of violence in Oakland;
5) Develop trust in caring adults so that they can guide them into positive lifestyles that include going to college.
Over 200 children have participated throughout the year in 16 soccer teams.
They have attended over 1,000 practices, 22 per week, 88 per month. We have held 14 large competitions in 2009.
In addition, the youth have also participated in workshops about healthy behaviors, nutrition, staying in school and overall mentoring opportunities.
The family engagement has also been strong. We have had a showing of over 400 family members to each of the final league games, that came to support the youth and community.
How you can help:Participation in the teams and events for children and families is free of charge. You can help us keep the program strong by helping us secure the following resources:
1) A proper practice and game field;
2) Uniforms, insurance, trophies and prizes, tournament fees, referees;
3) Transportation for youth to attend practice and games.
